We’re All Looking for a Place to Belong

I still get goosebumps when I stop and look around Ensemble. Not because of the offices or the space itself, but because of the people.

Sometimes it's during a conversation in the kitchen. Sometimes it's watching two members solve a business problem over coffee. And sometimes it's seeing someone who walked through our doors just a few months ago quietly become part of the rhythm of this place.

When I dreamed about opening Ensemble more than ten years ago, my vision wasn't about beautiful offices, the color of the walls, or the carpet tile. It wasn't even about coworking. It was about creating a place where people felt like they belonged. A place they could call home for their work.

Looking back now, I realize that's what we've been building all along.

I Think We're All Looking For It

Have you ever walked into a room full of people and still felt completely alone?

Most of us have. Trust me, even the most extroverted person can feel alone in a room. You can be surrounded by conversations, attend networking events, participate in online groups, or even work in a busy office and still wonder if you truly fit.

Then there are those places that simply feel different. Someone remembers your name from the first time you met. They ask how you're doing and actually wait for the answer. Familiar faces jump out at you. Someone waves as you walk by on your way to grab a cup of coffee. You begin to relax because it feels natural or comfortable?.

That's belonging. And whether we realize it or not, I think we're all looking for it.

The Way We Work Has Changed

The way we work has changed dramatically over the last several years. Many of us have the freedom to work from home, a coffee shop, a shared office, or just about anywhere with a reliable internet connection. That flexibility has been a gift.

Yet somewhere along the way, many of the little moments that naturally connected us in a traditional work environment began to disappear. The impromptu conversations before a meeting. The quick question asked from across the room. The coworker who notices you're having a hard day. The familiar faces that slowly become trusted relationships.

We've never had more ways to work independently. Yet many people have never felt more alone while doing it. The truth is, independence and connection are not opposites. We need both.

I've Watched Belonging Happen

One of my favorite things about owning Ensemble has been watching "belonging" happen in real time. I've watched one of the shyest men I've ever met walk through our doors. He is a brilliant technology analyst, but at first, he mostly kept to himself. Over time, something changed. He started making connections. He became part of conversations. One summer, he even spent time tutoring a young intern in calculus because he saw someone who needed help and quietly stepped in. No one asked him to do that. He simply found a place where he felt comfortable enough to become more of who he already was.

I've also learned that sometimes the most important part of my job isn't solving a problem or answering a question. It's simply walking by someone's desk, saying hello, and asking how they're doing. I've seen people's faces change and the little glimmer in their eyes when they realize someone knows their name, is genuinely happy to see them, and cares enough to ask.

You don't find that often in the workplace anymore. And that's exactly why it matters.

Community Becomes Family

Over the years, we've celebrated new businesses, promotions, engagements, weddings, and the birth of babies. We've also stood beside one another through layoffs, illness, loss, and funerals. Just a few weeks ago, we celebrated one of our longest-standing members on her 80th birthday. Only weeks later, her husband of more than forty years passed away. Watching our members surround her with love and support reminded me that Ensemble has become much more than a place to work.

It has become a place where people show up for one another. Collaborations happen here every week. Referrals are shared. Partnerships are formed. But those things happen because relationships come first.

Some of the greatest things created inside these walls aren't businesses at all. They're friendships.

Maybe That's What Makes the Difference

People often ask what makes Ensemble different. Yes, we have offices, meeting rooms, great coffee, fast internet, and all the things you'd expect from a coworking space. But none of those are the reason people stay. People stay because they feel seen. They know someone will notice if they walk through the front door. They know someone will celebrate their wins, encourage them through difficult seasons, introduce them to someone who might help, or simply ask how they're doing.

You can't put that on an amenities list. But I believe it's the most valuable thing we offer.

A Place to Belong

Looking back, I realize my dream was never just to build another coworking space. It was to create a place where people felt welcomed. Where they knew their work mattered, but so did they. Where entrepreneurs, remote professionals, creatives, and business owners could build successful something while knowing they didn't have to do it alone.

Because even though we all work independently, I don't believe we were ever meant to build our lives or our businesses that way. 

Maybe that's why I believe we're all looking for a place to belong. Not just a place to work. A place where we're known. A place where someone notices when we walk through the door. A place where we can build something meaningful without feeling like we have to do it alone.
